I am directed by Viscount Halifax to acknowledge

the receipt of your letter No. 53611/39 of the 8th August

on the subject of the Hong Kong University.

2. Lord Halifax is in entire sympathy with the views

expressed by Mr. MacDonald. He is of the opinion that the

University is a valuable instrument for propagating British

ideals and spreading British influence in China and that it

should be given all the support and assistance possible in

increasing its usefulness in this respect.

3. Subject to any observations which the Treasury

may have to offer Lord Halifax concurs in the reply which

it is proposed to send to Sir Geoffry Northcote.
